Jug O Coffee!

In the Four Hour Body, Tim Ferriss cites a research study that indicates artificial sweeteners may make it harder to lose weight and he notes that in his own experience he must limit his Diet Coke consumption to 12 oz (wtf?!) per day for optimum results.  My friend Miriam who successfully lost a significant amount of weight a few years ago concurs.

This is really, really bad news for me.  I’m a 5-8 Diet Coke a day girl.  But in the name of becoming thin, I’m going to make a concerted effort to reduce both my soda and artificial sweetener intake. Plus, given that regular price of Coke products has skyrocketed to over $6 in our area, I have an added reason to cut back. I’m not ready to give it up totally yet, but reducing it is a start.

The solution: Jug O Coffee!

Most mornings now I make a pot of coffee to last throughout the day.  I’ve been experimenting with regular, decaf and half-caff Eight O’Clock ground coffee.  (Yeah, it’s the old A&P store brand, but it’s damned good and not nearly as bitter as the overpriced Starbucks – so don’t scoff!)  I start with 4 ounces of whole milk and add 1-2 Equal packs for the entire jug.  Then add about 30 ounces of coffee and sometimes cinnamon or a tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa.

Yes, I know we’re supposed to avoid dairy on the slow carb diet too.  But for God’s sake if I have to give up my Diet Coke, I at least need a reasonable substitute.  I’m fat enough now that a half-cup of milk and a couple of sweeteners per day isn’t making a huge difference in the weight loss, but I assume I will have to give it up later when losing weight becomes more difficult.  Until my jug o coffee becomes a limiting factor in losing weight, you’ll have to pry it from my surprisingly-strong-considering-how-freaking-hungry-I-am hands.
